Coughing
is the natural way our body reacts and defends itself from
irritation originating from the lungs, throat, or the connecting passages
between them. However, coughing sometimes is a sign that both our upper and
lower respiratory track has infections. These infections may include flu,
colds, sinus infections, bronchitis, measles, croup, bronchiolitis, or
pneumonia. Regular cough can be a sign of asthma for children. Cough can
also be caused by allergies. This can be chronic sinusitis, GE reflux,
inhaled foreign bodies, pertussis, tuberculosis, irritation from little air
particles, smoke, or even habit. Since everyone can have cough, knowing the
ways to cure it is important. But before you go for cough syrups, you may
consider trying home remedies using the products from your kitchen such as
ginger, garlic, honey, lemon, vinegar, pepper, cayenne, and of course water.
Here are some suggested
cough home remedies:
Ginger-Cayenne-Vinegar
Mixture: Mix 1/4 tsp ground ginger, 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, 1
tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp honey, and 2 tbsp water. Take a couple of
teaspoons of the mixture and an instant cure can be experienced.
Ginger-Garlic-Lemon Tea:
Boil a cup of water with grated/sliced ginger, a clove of garlic, and fresh
lemon in a saucepan for 20 minutes. After straining the tea, add 1 tsp of
honey and drink immediately. It will sooth the throat and open nasal
passages which give you a relief. The vitamins from the lemon will also help
in eliminating the cough.
Black Pepper:
Melt some butter in a heated small pan. Add in 1 tsp of black pepper and let
it boil. Then, remove from heat. Chew the black pepper after it is cool and
drink with a glass of milk. Your cough will surely go.
Onion-Honey Syrup:
Finely chopped and extract juice from the raw onion. Mix 1 tsp of onion
juice with 1 tsp of honey and keep 4 to 5 hours to make cough syrup. Take
twice daily.
Onion-Lemon Tea:
Crush a medium-sized onion and add juice from 1 lemon. Then, add a cup of
boiling water to the mixture. Add 1 tsp of honey before drinking. Take two
to three times daily. This is good for removing phlegm.
Aniseed Tea:
Aniseed is effective for treating hard dry cough with difficult
expectoration as it breaks up the mucus. Aniseed tea should be taken
regularly for treating this condition.
Grape Juice:
Grape juice acts as an expectorant which can relieve cold and cough. Mix a
cup of grape juice with 1 tsp of honey and drink it to relieve your cough.
