Home Remedies for Toothache

Toothache is an aching pain in or around a tooth. Patients will experience a deep and sharp throbbing sensations and extreme sensitivity in a tooth. Toothaches are usually caused by cavities. Left over food around the tooth resulted in the build up of bacteria and decay which will eventually penetrate the pulp of the tooth. This will then result in inflammation and pain. Practicing good oral hygiene can prevent such toothaches. Besides cavities, toothaches may also due to gum disease, the emergence of wisdom teeth, infection of dental pulp, jaw disease and etc. The severity of the pain differs depending on the cause, but can range from a mild discomfort to excruciating pain. The act of chewing and the temperature of the food eaten (either cold or hot) might aggravate this pain. To help yourself relieving from the suffering intense pains of your aching tooth, you may try some home remedies.

Here are some simple home remedies for toothache:

Various Types of Mouthwash Solution: Use the solution for gargling and let it go into the hole of the aching tooth for a while. Repeat this for several times until you feel a relief from pain.

  • Boiled Guava Leaves Solution: Put about 5 guava leaves in water and heat until boil. Leave the solution for some time until it become warm. Gargle using the warm solution.
  • Warm Salt Solution: Mix about 3 tsp of salt with a glass of warm water and use it for gargling. The salt helps cleansing the infected tooth and reducing the swelling and pain.
  • Tea Tree Oil Solution: Prepare a tea tree oil mouthwash by adding a few drops oil to a glass of water. Rinse your mouth carefully and AVOID swallowing the solution. This helps in relieving toothache.
  • Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide: Use 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide for gargling. The hydrogen peroxide will penetrate the tooth and kill the infection.
  • Wheatgrass Juice: You can use wheatgrass juice as a mouthwash or chew wheatgrass directly to cure toothache. It helps drawing toxins from the gums and preventing the growth of bacteria.

Various Homemade Pastes for Pain Relief: Dab a small piece of cotton bud in these pastes and put on the tooth cavity to quickly relieve the pain.

  • Asafetida-Lemon Juice Paste: Grind asafetida with lemon juice to make a paste and slightly warm it and apply.
  • Bayberry Bark-Vinegar Paste: Mix some bayberry bark with vinegar to form a paste and apply on the aching tooth. You can also apply some on the gums to strengthen them.
  • Cinnamon-Honey Paste: Add 1 tsp of cinnamon powder to 5 tsp of honey and mix to make a paste and apply for 3 times a day. Store the unused portion at room temperature.

Vanilla/Almond extracts: Both vanilla and almond extract contain about 35% alcohol and work wonders as a home remedy for toothache. Dip a cotton ball in either one of the extract and place on the affected tooth.

Clove Oil: Dab a small piece of cotton bud in the clove oil and packed in the cleaned aching tooth. Clove oil (also called Eugenol) is an excellent pain reliever for toothaches which caused by temperature sensitivity. It also contains antiseptic properties which can help fighting infections.

Garlic-Salt: Crush a clove of garlic and add some salt to it. Then, place it on the aching tooth for a while to ease the toothache. Remember NOT to leave the garlic for too long as it might cause burning to the gums. Crushed fresh garlic contains Allicin which helps in reducing pain.

Onion: Onion contains antibacterial properties. Chewing raw onion for 3 minutes daily will help killing the bacteria in the mouth and preventing tooth disorders. You can also cut a small piece of onion and put on the aching tooth for pain relief.

Lime: Cut a slice of lime and put on the tooth to get pain relief. Lime is a citrus fruit and is rich in vitamin C. It prevents the formation of cavities, reduces gums bleeding and helps you maintaining strong teeth.

Home remedies are just providing temporary relief for toothache. It is best to consult your dentist to have a proper treatment for your dental problems.
